Le 13 septembre 1858, l'Austria, un navire de passagers parti de Hambourg à destination de New York avec à son bord plus de cinq cents émigrants et quelques passagers plus fortunés, fait naufrage à la suite d'un terrible incendie au large de Terre-Neuve. Ernest Renaud, le capitaine du Maurice, un navire de commerce Nantais aperçoit le sinistre. Il porte alors assistance aux survivants. Le récit de ces derniers, rapporté par la presse partout dans le monde connaît un écho considérable. Cinquante ans avant le Titanic, c'est une des plus tragiques catastrophes maritimes du 19e siècle. Ernest Renaud devient alors pour la presse la figure même du héros, un marin au comportement exemplaire. Le musée d'histoire de Nantes a proposé à travers cette exposition de questionner le fait divers par tous les moyens possibles.
