Dieser Begleitband zu einer Ausstellung des National Maritime Museums behandelt die Geschichte der Royal Navy während der zweiten Hälfte des achtzehnten und zu Beginn des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts in zeitgenössischen Karikaturen. Aus diesem besonderen Blickwinkel wird der Status der Marine in der britischen Gesellschaft und Kultur gezeigt und durch die Kombination von historischer und kunsthistorischer Expertise von den Autoren erklärt. Die Karikaturen stammen aus der Sammlung des National Maritime Museums und reichen von der politischen Satire bis zu derben Darstellungen betrunkener Seemänner. Unter anderem werden Karikaturen von James Gillray, Thomas Rowlandson und Isaac Cruikshank abgebildet.
